A Cambridge International Magnet School

W. R. Thomas Middle School (WRTMS) is a high-achieving and culturally diverse public school in Miami, Florida. Within this dynamic learning community, the Cambridge International Magnet Program stands as a premier “program within a school,” empowering students to achieve high global academic standards while embracing cultural diversity and academic excellence.

Rooted in the vision of cultivating global awareness, cultural sensitivity, inclusivity, and technological competence, the Cambridge International Magnet Program at WRTMS delivers a rich liberal arts curriculum enhanced by the Cambridge philosophy of education. Through a balance of traditional and digital instruction, students engage in meaningful inquiry into global topics such as cultural relativity, social justice, and environmental sustainability. These experiences build essential skills in critical thinking, research, communication, collaboration, and reflection—equipping students to thrive in an interconnected world.

Students enrolled in the WRTMS Cambridge International Magnet Program gain a unique academic advantage. Their coursework prepares them to advance into the Cambridge Upper Secondary Program, with the opportunity to earn the prestigious Cambridge AICE Diploma and qualify for the Florida Bright Futures Scholarship.

Through cross-curricular projects that integrate art, literature, technology, and performance, students celebrate their individual cultures while discovering shared values and experiences. The program’s global perspective and rigorous academic foundation prepare every Cambridge student at WRTMS to become a compassionate, informed, and active citizen of the world.

What is Cambridge?

The Cambridge Secondary 1 Program is an innovative and accelerated method of academic study offered solely through the University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). The Cambridge Academy Magnet is headed by a team of dedicated highly qualified educators who instill global educational standards within a professional learning community.

The “Cambridge Secondary 1” program offers a flexible liberal arts curriculum with Checkpoint Exams which provide an external international benchmark for learner performance. Global benchmarks are infused throughout all subjects with an emphasis in core classes: Language Arts, Science, Social Studies and Mathematics classes. Students will learn to gather and analyze data through research, evaluation and testing, as well as to properly document and communicate their results. The emphasis of this program is on creating awareness of future global needs, developing technological competence, and increasing students’ communications capacity.

Cambridge Program Mission

Our mission is to create an elite learning community which will nurture students’ natural curiosity of the world as they reflect on the impact they presently have and will develop as they continue onto secondary school education programs and enter the global workforce of the future.
